Suede and sheepskin look best when they are looked after a little. These five habits take a few minutes and make a big difference.
1. Protect before the first wear
Spray a suede protector on clean, dry shoes and let it dry overnight. It helps water and stains bead off instead of soaking in. Repeat every few weeks in winter.
2. Brush, do not scrub
Use a soft suede brush to lift dirt and bring back the nap. Brush gently in one direction.
3. Blot water, then air dry
If your pair gets wet, blot it with a clean towel, stuff it with paper to keep its shape and let it dry at room temperature. Never put it next to a heater or in the sun, which can stiffen and crack the suede.
4. Skip the washing machine
Machine washing can shrink sheepskin and leave marks on suede. Use a cleaner made for suede and sheepskin and a damp cloth instead.
5. Store them well
Keep them in a cool, dry place, ideally in a dust bag, with paper inside to hold the shape.
